NETBALL
TAMWORTH’S Carter St courts were alive with colour and netball action on Sunday with hundreds of players shooting for Tamworth Games honours.
The annual games this year attracted 60 teams and from across the expanses of the region, with Armidale, Glen Innes, Inverell, Narrabri, Gunnedah, Quirindi and Baradine all entering teams.
The carnival was played across nine divisions and it was the visitors who fared the better, winning five of the titles on offer.
Narrabri returned home with two, with the Josies declared Division 2 winners under the top of the standings format, and their 13s likewise in Division 5.
They finished ahead of Gunnedah (Gladiators) who had success in Division 5 with the Polkadots.
That was one of two divisions where a countback on goal averages was required to confirm the placings, with the Armidale Jets edging out Calrossy for second.
Division 8, won by Inverell Holy Trinity, was the other division that had to fall back on a countback, with Gunnedah St Xaviers Gladiators taking second ahead of Westdale Waratahs.
Quirindi’s Team Awesome also lived up to their name, finishing on top in Division 3.
Tamworth South was the best performed of the local teams, with the Sizzling Sausages winning Division 6 and the Superheros Division 7.
The Division 1 honours went the way of St Ed’s Shannelle’s, who dropped just the one game – their final match against runners-up Golden Oldies.
The St Ed’s team was backing up from the Saturday competition where it is one of the top teams in the Open A Division.
St Joseph’s Pink Puppies were the other victors, winning Division 9, while Calrossy, McCarthy, William Cowper, Timbumburi and Westdale all had teams that were runners-up.
