TAMWORTH’S 10 Australian Country hockey representatives return home from Busselton, Western Australia this evening with gold medals galore, two national titles and seven Australian player selection successes.
Six Tamworth players - Renae Aldridge, Jamie Hartley, Shelley Stevenson, Kate Le Brocq, Ashley Allen and Kim Hill - helped the NSW Country side to an unbeaten repeat national title while Andrew Kelly, Aaron Aldridge, Mitch Burrows and Lindsay Burrows helped the NSW men to their first national country title in six years.
Five of the women’s side - Aldridge, Hill, Le Brocq, Stevenson and Allen - were named in the Australian Country side to play a four-nation tournament in Malaysia next April while two men - Kelly and Aldridge - were named in the Australian Country men’s side.
Tamworth women’s coach Jeff Aldridge, who will coach the Australian Country women’s side in next year’s four-nations tournament against Malaysia, Singapore and Fiji, was in Busselton for the Australian Country Men’s and Women’s Hockey titles.
"It’s a brilliant result for us in Tamworth," Aldridge said.
"It shows just how good and competitive hockey is at the moment.
"And it’s great for the men too.
"The women defended their title they won last year but the men had not won for six years.
"It’s just great to win both titles."
Aldridge said the NSW women went through undefeated but almost fell at the final hurdle.
"They led Queensland 2-nil but finished 3-all and only won 4-3 in sudden-death extra time.
"Jamie Hartley, Shelley Stevenson and team captain Renae Aldridge scored goals while Aldridge was named player of the tournament and Australian captain again."
The NSW men then overturned a previous loss to Queensland by winning their final 2-1, with Dubbo’s Ben Hawkins and Lithgow’s Graeme Thompson the goalscorers.
"Andrew Kelly had a blinder in goals in the final," Jeff Aldridge said.
"Lindsay Burrows had a big game as well."
Aaron Aldridge also finished the tournament as highest NSW goalscorer, with six goals.
