 Government failing Liverpool Plains

Government failing Liverpool Plains

29/07/2008 9:03:00 AM
What has to be done to get all of our politicians, together with all of their parties, to wake up. Over the last 50 years water management has deteriorated, the situation has gone from poor management to ruinous management.

Now to top it off, the State Government is once again failing the people of this state by allowing the exploration for coal under the Liverpool Plains.

Our Federal Government is sitting on its hands and doing nothing to prevent a possible disaster for these Liverpool Plains.

The previous Federal Government had the opportunity and they could have taken preventative action, however they did nothing, – there was an election on the horizon.

For the want of a little intestinal fortitude, all of these politicians are once again failing their electorates by not instigating an open and full study of all possible effects coal mining would have on the water table of the Liverpool plains.

Remember, these same Liverpool Plains are some of the most productive agricultural country in Australia, if not the world.

There is a prohibitive possibility that coal mining could end the productive life of these same Liverpool Plains if it is allowed by all of our political parties.

The big dollars of coal mining, are only a short term gain, whereas agriculture will give the best long term return for Australia, specifically in this case.

It is no longer a vague threat to the water under those plains, it is now an acute possibility that a disaster is waiting on our politicians’ inaction.

All political parties must take action now, not next year. They must remember that: water is life.

How true is this - and now we have been sold out to the Chinese! What short sighted government in this climate of global warming, world wide food shortages would actively encourage the destruction of one of the most beautiful and fertile regions in the world - it smacks of hypocrisy and the need to make a quick buck. The regional centres won't benefit as the money does not get funded into infrastructure. The State Government will go down in history as destructive and shortsighted.
